Wine Color: White Vintage: 2007 Varietal: Chardonnay Style: Still Size: 750ml Origin: Oceania > New Zealand > Marlborough
The Wine Advocate 85 pts - Neal Martin The 2007 Chardonnay spent a year in barrel matured in 20% new oak with 8% under malo. The fruit again seems rather subdued and lacking definition. Touches of grapefruit and dried mango, but all rather smudged. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe honeyed fruits, touches of nectarine and passion fruit, the oak a little prominent especially on the finish but it has more definition and poise than the Sauvignon Blanc. Moderate length. It comes across rather anonymous.
Wine Spectator 88 pts - Harvey Steiman Smooth and round, with a smoky edge to the lemon, orange and pear flavors, balanced with lively acidity. Drink now.
Wine Enthusiast 90 pts - Joe Czerwinski Full-bodied, rich and custardy, with ripe melon and pineapple fruit framed by toasted grain. This is a big, powerful, opulent Chardonnay, yet it also shows the finesse expected from Cloudy Bay. Drink it over the next year or two.
Description: An irresistible mix of ripe citrus and toasted nut aromas reminiscent of grapefruit, fig and pistachio biscotti taken with chamomile tea. The palate leads with savoury notes which give way to a taut citrus core, revealing the vibrant Marlborough fruit. Natural yeast fermentation and judicious oak handling combine to deliver a refined and textural finish. Expect the 2007 Cloudy Bay Chardonnay to age gracefully over the next five to seven years.
