ButteryThe Wine Advocate 89 pts - Jay MillerThe 2009 Alpha Chardonnay was fermented and aged sur lie with batonnage for 12 months in French oak with 40% of the wine put through malolactic fermentation. Notions of pear, white fruits, and buttered popcorn inform the nose of a layered, creamy-textured wine with nicely integrated oak, excellent balance, and a lengthy finish. Drink this classy effort over the next 3-4 years.
Wine Spectator 89 pts - Nathan WesleyA concentrated white, displaying spicy pineapple, yellow melon, clementine and cream notes that remain focused through the zesty finish. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
Wine Enthusiast 88 pts - Michael SchachnerA little flat and resiny on first take, with a lot of toast and oaky sweetness to the nose. The palate is propped up by citrusy acidity, which adds snap to an otherwise creamy and resiny palate with sweet fruit and spice flavors. Citrusy acids are the key to keeping this oaky wine's head above water.
Description:Its intense golden color with green hues shows a clean and brilliant wine. On the nose the Montes Alpha Chardonnay is a powerful and fruity wine that showcases the wonderful character of its premium cool-climate Casablanca Chardonnay grapes. Banana, pineapple and tropical fruits become evident on the mouth, accompanied by a well integrated French oak that adds a touch of toast and elegance to the wine without covering its flavors. The finish is long and very pleasant.
A wine of great softness and creaminess that maintains the characteristic freshness of the Casablanca Valley.
