"Malbec, a slightly rustic French grape that has become a star of Argentine reds, now plays a minor blending role in Bordeaux. It is making its last major stand in France in Cahors, a southwestern region, where it is Domaine de Lagrezette's key player. The owner, Alain Dominique Perrin, a former Cartier executive, has introduced 2003 Zette, a gutsy malbec for everyday use. Softened by Merlot, it hints at Le Pigeonnier, his deluxe blend." --Howard G. Goldberg, The New York Times

Don Miguel Gascon Malbec
Don Miguel Gascon Malbec
Our Price: $13.99

Since 1884, the wines of Don Miguel Gascón have been recognized for the rich, smooth flavors that come from Argentina's Mendoza wine region. High altitude vineyards situated along the Cordillera of the Andes Mountains produce full mature grapes for this classic Malbec. Don Miguel Gascon sailed to Argentina from Aragon, Spain, at the age of 19 years, without a penny to his name. Four years later, the ingenious Don Miguel managed to buy 42 acres of land, plant vineyards and build a winery. Today the winery is owned by the Nicholas Catena family. In 1993, Nicolas Catena and a group of investors acquired a majority interest in Bodegas Escorihuela. In the tradition of ardent adventurer and founder, Catena and his partners have turned Bodegas Escorihuela into a Mecca of experimentation with food, art and wine. Bodegas Escorihuela is the home of Restaurant 1884, which has one of the best wine lists in Argentina and a changing menu created by the renowned chef Francis Mallmann.

Michel Torino Cuma Malbec
Michel Torino Cuma Malbec
Our Price: $13.99

This marks the U.S. debut of Torino’s organic line called Cuma, which means clean and pure in a native language. The wine is indeed that; it’s a grapy, fun wine with ribald boysenberry fruit. And with air it shows some softness that makes it go down easy.
