With a beautiful dark crimson color, this wine is full of blueberry and blackberry compote aromas, with hints of mocha and char. The wine is unusually big in style for a Merlot, but has a silky mouthfeel and inviting black cherry fruit flavors. Unabashedly ripe, with lots of spice, this wine has a black tea and truffle finish. This is the ripest, richest Merlot we’ve made to date, and it is fabulous with lamb or marinated beef.

Winemaker Notes - Continuing our recent tradition of keeping this wine 100% Merlot, the vintage delivers pure varietal aromas and flavors with enough body and depth to defy the myth that Merlot is Cabernet with training wheels. With a deep garnet color, the wine offers aromas of red currant, damp earth and a touch of cedar. Across the palate the wines soft and plush texture is full of fruit flavors - plum and black cherry lead to a lingering finish that hints at toasted almonds. This wines resolved tannins, subtle oak and supple mouthfeel make it well suited for roasted rack of lamb with a Bing cherry jus.

Eagle Trace Merlot (2004)

The name Merlot conjures up many images of wine. However, when you think of the finest quality, the wines of Bordeaux, specifically those from the right bank of the Dordogne River in the Village or Pomerol come to mind. Here one finds the wines of the likes of Chateau Petrus, L’Evangile and Le Pin. Much like those vineyards, our estate wines produce Merlot with opulence, finesse and rich ripe fruit. The 2004 Vintage was a classic growing season which allowed for wonderful flavor development. The crop was exceptionally small and produced grapes with great intensity.

Developed and intense fruit from this harvest has produced one of our most full-bodied merlots yet! Deep cherry fruit hits both the nose and palate upon the first sip, followed by soft hints of summer anise. Touches of pipe tobacco and spicy oak lend weight to the finish, trailed by firm, assertive tannins.
