Costers Del Siurana Priorat Clos De L'obac 2003

Power, structure and complexity are the three characteristics of this wine. These qualities are partly the result of the diversity of altitude and orientation of the eight Clos de l'Obac vineyards, all of which are sited around the town of Gratallops. The "coupage" is of five grape varieties of which those from more than fifty year old Garnacha and Carinena vines are the most important. They bring to the wine its fine balance and its unique personality.

Wine Advocate 92 Points:
"The Miserere is composed of 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Garnacha, 26% Tempranillo, 10% Merlot, and 10% Carinena aged for 12 months in French oak. Garnet-colored, it offers up a complex perfume of slate, lavender, cassis, and black cherry. It falls on the feminine side of Priorat with an elegant personality and racy flavors. Supple and ripe, it is already approachable but will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring."

Priorat produces wines that many consider to be Spain's most elite. What distinguishes Priorat from other grape-growing regions is its soil type known as ?llicorella?. The name comes from the Catalan word for licorice, chosen to describe the black, rather shiny, slate and quartzite substrate which is high in mineral content. It produces a wine that is uniquely ?Priorat?; intense and minerally. Serving suggestions: Sausage, hearty beef or veal dishes, roasted vegetables, and tangy tomato sauces.

WS 92 Points: "This elegant red delivers expressive morello, garrigue, licorice and tobacco flavors on a sinuous frame. Balanced and harmonious, expressive and long. Drink now through 2014. 400 cases made."
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 90 pts.:
"Deep ruby color. Ripe cherry and floral aromas are complicated by baking spices and smoky minerals; already showing a lot of complexity on the nose. Taut red berry and bitter cherry flavors are framed by dusty tannins and energized by tangy minerality. A precise wine that impresses with elegance rather than power. From young vines."

Nuances of liquorice and very ripe black fruit (marmalade), deed and complex fragrances, graphite, toasted notes. In the mouth, it has a good structure, balanced acidity, round tannins and a long finish that is persistent.
