Calcu 2008
Calcu 2008 - 85pts
Price: $10.68

Red Wine   Rated 85pts by WS

In this ?Super Chilean? blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Carmenere, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Petit Verdot, winemakers Ricardo Rivadeneira and Alejandro Jofre capture the diversity of the Colchagua Valley by combining a range of flavors into a single wine. Alejandro and Ricardo artfully blend the mineral notes and fresh acidity of grapes from the Andes foothills with the ripe tannins and red fruit from the center of the valley, and, finally, add richness and body from grapes grown closer to the Pacific Ocean. The resulting wine is lightly oaked, allowing the grapes' natural, fresh fruit character to shine through.

Deep cherry-red. Intense and complex, with very evenly ripe fruit and pronounced blackberry, blueberry, and blackcurrant aromas that meld with notes of fine chocolate and tobacco. Big-bodied, well-structured, and nicely concentrated, with good balance and elegance. The degree of ripeness and quality of the tannins is a firm reminder of the personality of the Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto.

The grapes were harvested at optimal maturity during the first week of April from old vineyards trained to vertical shoot position. Once at the winery the grapes went through a selection belt to remove all foreign and green material. After crushing, 50% of the must went through a cold maceration process for three days at 8? Celsius. The fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with controlled temperature at 28?C for 7?8 days. Once this was completed, it remained on the skins for further 4?5 days. Malolactic fermentation took place naturally in stainless steel tanks which were also temperature controlled at a range of 20?22?C (68??72?F).
Cucao Px 2008
Cucao Px 2008 - 86pts
Price: $11.95

White Wine   Rated 86pts by WS

This unique grape from the northern Elqui Valley in Chile is treasured for its explosively juicy personality and bracing acidity?a delicious, thirst-quenching combination. Suggestions of white pepper mix with wildflowers and lemon zest on the nose; the mouth is silky but concentrated, with waves of citrus fruit, quince and plenty of zesty, sea-salty flavors. As a dry wine, PX (typically used to produce the Chilean distilled spirit pisco) is lively, refreshing and very rare?a great find for those weary of the same old white wines. A great value, too!
